-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mental magic is a type of magic that utilizes the target's brainwaves.
It works by creating mana waves with the same amplitude as brainwaves, causing a drift phenomenon where the mana waves interfere with the brainwaves.
To create consistent mana waves, a medium, which is the material for mental magic, is required.
There are various types of mediums, such as uranium ore, tri-pole magnets, specially processed magic stones, and insects with brainwaves similar to the target, each with its own unique characteristics.
"Artifacts? You mean mediums?"
"Yes. To cast mental magic on the entire academy building, there must be numerous mediums planted all over the place."
The Lich's mental magic quest.
I was helplessly defeated in the 2nd playthrough.
In the 3rd playthrough, I tried to find and remove the artifacts for the area-wide mental magic in advance, but
I failed.
Even then, I scoured the academy with my friends, but couldn't find a single medium.
This time, I have stronger companions and friends than ever before, so it has to be different.
"Then we should find them quickly!"
"It won't be easy. Would they have placed the mediums in an easy-to-find place while planning such a massive scheme?"
Davian nodded.
Latia is right.
I couldn't find them in the previous playthrough.
"How about informing the professors?"
I already tried that.
But in the end, I couldn't find the Lich.
Eventually, Professor Billian Disipulus was cleared of suspicion.
And that night.
The Lich appeared in the academy.
"It's no use. Not unless you find solid evidence."
Liber replied with a serious face.
"So, we have to solve it ourselves again."
Bellum raised his hand.
"I'll gather some more friends!"
"Okay, Bellum. Don't go into too much detail. They won't believe it anyway. Let's just try to find the artifacts this weekend."
"Davian, when does that Lich appear?"
Davian looked out the window.
Early morning.
The sun, just rising above the mountain peaks, revealed its fully round form.
In both the 2nd and 3rd playthroughs.
The Lich's area-wide mental magic incident happened on the night of the full moon, like that sun.
"The night of the full moon."
Latia nodded.
"The night when mana fluctuates?"
"Yeah."
"Not much time left."
After the meeting, Davian and his group set off in pairs to search the academy.
The three friends from the Department of Swordsmanship, who had little knowledge of mediums, were paired with friends from the Department of Magic.
On the way to the academy, Bellum persuaded a student from the Department of Integrated Martial Arts to join the search.
He truly had an amazing ability to connect with people.
Davian ended up being paired with Bellus.
"How's academy life?"
"It's hard to keep up with all the detailed major classes in the Department of Magic, but spirit magic is so much fun."
"I heard you usually go to the forest behind the Medio Garden when you don't have class?"
"It feels the most comfortable there... And I can meet new spirit friends when I'm there."
After searching the first floor of the library thoroughly, Davian and Bellus headed to the second floor.
"Did all of your older brother's friends become friends from the beginning of the first semester? I'm jealous. To always have a group of friends."
"Some of them became friends from the beginning of the semester, and some of them became friends later."
Come to think of it.
Except for Karin, they all became friends in the first semester of their first year.
'Is it thanks to Bellum?'
Bonita, and Latia too, quickly became friends without Davian having to make any effort.
"Bellus, don't you have any close friends?"
"I have many! Spi... Ah, that's not what you meant."
Bellus hung his head.
"Only spirit friends. Almost all the other classmates are nobles, so it's a bit difficult to get close to them, and since I'm mainly in the forest, I don't have much time to run into them. Lately, it feels like the other kids are treating me like I'm not there..."
"Treating you like you're not there? You?"
"Ah... well, it's not like they're exactly bullying me. But it's not like there are any kids who are approaching me either..."
If it's the first year, there might be kids who haven't shed their noble status and are discriminating.
But that's not the reason for excluding him.
Bellus's skills are too outstanding to exclude him because of his low status.
Rather, it's more likely that they can't easily approach Bellus, who has such outstanding skills and spends most of his time in the forest.
"But it's okay! I've become friends with such wonderful seniors thanks to my brother. Everyone gathers at my brother's house every weekend, so I actually look forward to the weekends."
"Don't just stay in the forest, try approaching them first. They might all be waiting for you."
"Huh?"
"Other kids are probably having a harder time approaching you than you're having a hard time approaching them. A spirit mage like you is born maybe once in a hundred years."
"Really?"
"Yeah. The more friends you have, the better. Preferably trustworthy friends who you can rely on during war."
"I don't plan on getting a job in a place like a battlefield."
"I'm not talking about after graduation."
"Then?"
Because this Elton Academy is going to become a battlefield.
"You never know when something might happen. Companions are important. Let's search the second floor."
"Ah! Yes, Brother!"
That night.
Davian's dorm room.
Karin and Nubes finally returned.
"Nothing. I looked all day and didn't see anything that looked like a mental magic medium."
The same was true for all the groups.
Three groups searched the 2nd-year area, and two groups searched the common area, but no one came back with meaningful results.
"Maybe they dug a hole and buried them?"
"Hey, Nubes. Then it wouldn't work properly."
"Ah, really?"
"Mental magic isn't usually that simple."
"I don't know much about it..."
Bonita asked.
"How about taking down Professor Billian before the full moon?"
It's not easy.
Of course, it's not difficult to ambush and kill him when he's off guard.
But doing so would make you a student who murdered a professor without any justification.
"You'll be kicked out of the academy and punished by the royal family."
"What about secretly getting a confession out of him like we did with Marquis Harrington?"
That's not easy either.
Davian replied.
"Unless we ambush and kill him in one go, it's not easy. If we reveal that we know about the professor's plan, he'll cast mental magic on us right away. We can't handle it yet if Professor Billian decides to cast mental magic at close range."
"You said you need a medium to cast mental magic?"
Liber answered instead.
"The necklaces, rings, and bracelets that the professor usually wears. They're all mediums."
"Ah..."
The opponent is a professor at Elton Academy.
Social status, skills, nothing is easy to deal with.
"Is that how powerful mental magic is?"
"If Professor Billian decides to cast mental magic one-on-one at close range, none of us can overcome it."
"So, that terrifying mental magic is going to be cast as an area-of-effect spell by this Lich or whatever?"
Liber nodded.
"Based on my knowledge, I don't even know if it's possible. But if something like that happens, as Davian said, the result will be truly terrible. Area-of-effect mental magic... All the academy professors and students becoming puppets of the Lich, moving according to his will."
"It's not that bad, Liber."
"It's not?"
"Yeah. Since it's cast over a wide area, it's not that powerful. People with high mana affinity will react first. Only those with some kind of weakness in their minds will get caught up in it."
Latia nodded.
"If it's area-of-effect mental magic, then people with high mana affinity are actually more dangerous, as Davian said. Because they'll react more easily to the mana waves."
Latia said it casually.
All of her friends stared at Latia.
"What? Why?"
Liber carefully opened his mouth.
"It's you. Latia. The person with the highest mana affinity."
This time, Bonita turned her head to look at Davian.
"There's one more person. The person who got a three-digit mana affinity on the entrance exam."
Bellum opened his mouth wide and looked back and forth between Latia and Davian.
"Oh my god. Both Latia and Davian? Then who can handle it?"
Davian looked at Latia.
"At least not me."
"What? You're saying not you, Davian? So, you're saying I'm going to get caught in mental magic?"
Yeah.
Twice in the 2nd and 3rd playthroughs.
Even.
I died because of you in the 2nd playthrough.
Latia Meridiem.
Liber subtly changed the subject.
"That's not the problem. What if a professor gets caught in mental magic? Who can handle the Elton Academy faculty?"
Luna looked at Liber with a surprised expression.
"Don't tell me the professors..."
"Why, everyone boasts a high mana affinity and even got a professorship, right?"
"Is that so?"
Of course, there are.
Professors who get caught in mental magic.
That's why this quest is so terrifying.
Of course, the professors who don't get caught join forces to subdue the Lich.
But in the meantime.
Irreversible damage occurs in the dormitories of each grade.
Of course.
The current Davian could quell the dormitory disturbances that occurred in the 2nd and 3rd playthroughs on his own.
But.
The same things will be repeated in the other grade dormitories in the meantime.
The academy's forces must be maintained at maximum capacity until the demon wave quest begins.
If professors and students keep dying, the number of troops to receive the demon wave quest decreases.
"First, let's focus on trying to prevent it somehow before worrying about what will happen. Liber, you follow Professor Billian tomorrow."
"Me, me?"
"Yeah. If you get caught, just say you were looking for him because you had something to ask. You figure out what you want to ask in advance."
"That would be more natural. Alright, Davian."
"The rest of you, focus on finding the mediums tomorrow as well. I'll try to find the Lich's location in my own way."
Nubes jumped up.
"Good! Let's stop it!"
Bellum followed suit.
"Here we go again! Gray Bear Exploration Team! Is it Great White Shark Exploration Team now?"
Liber also stood up.
"Once a Gray Bear Exploration Team, always a Gray Bear Exploration Team!"
"Good! Gray Bear Exploration Team, cross!"
"We'll stop it!"
The next day.
The common space.
Davian is walking around, carefully looking at this building and that building.
'I'm sure they said the Lich first appeared in the common space.'
There was a high possibility that the Lich was hiding somewhere in the common space.
'A place where you can avoid people's eyes as much as possible in the common space...'
He passed the club hall and the large auditorium.
As he passed the student hall.
Davian noticed a building that was being prepared for demolition.
It was surrounded on all sides by a wide cloth to prevent students from entering without permission.
The old student hall.
It had been closed for several years due to the risk of collapse.
They said it would be demolished soon.
It might seem like a dangerous building being prepared for demolition to others.
But to Davian, it seemed like a very suitable hiding place for the Lich.
'Is it there?'
Davian took out Ferrarius's gloves from the inside pocket of his school uniform jacket and put them on both hands.
Unlike Professor Billian.
It's okay to kill the Lich as soon as he's found.
The most certain way to stop this situation.
The problem is...
'If I get discovered first, I'm done for.'
The opponent is a Lich who has researched mental magic all his life.
His magic power has also been greatly amplified as he became a Lich.
Even if it's Davian.
He might get caught if the guy casts mental magic first.
Davian, who was heading to the west side of the building where there was shadow, murmured quietly.
"Shadow Assimilation."
